MACON, GA – The Mayhem returned home to the friendly confines of the Macon Coliseum for Tickets for Toys Night where fans were encouraged to bring toys to donate in exchange for a Buy One Get One ticket offer. The toys will be donated to the Methodist’s Home for Children and Youth here in Macon. Your Mayhem were looking to finish off the second leg of a home and home against Pensacola and their third game in as many days during a grueling stretch of travel common in minor league hockey.
The tired legs would unfortunately show on Saturday night. First period penalties would exacerbate the issue for the Mayhem. Matt Rupert would get the scoring started early for the Ice Flyers after he slipped one by Mayhem netminder Michael Stiliadis on the Pensacola power play. Pensacola would continue to swarm the puck and establish possession straight away. After fighting off several early penalties, the Mayhem would concede one with mere seconds left in the period. The first period was all Pensacola with shot totals being scored as 13 to 4 in their favor.
With the first period penalty woes, the Macon squad never truly seemed to get their feet underneath them. Despite two power play opportunities of their own, the Mayhem never really got much going in the second either. The second frame would be a slowly grinding affair as the Mayhem had 9 shots to Pensacola’s 7. One of the Ice Flyer’s shots would sneak by Stiliadis however as Marcus Russell scored his sixth of the year. The Mayhem would head to the break trailing 3-0.
The Ice Flyers would afford the Mayhem a chance to get back in the game as they allowed two power play opportunities in the middle part of the final frame. Unfortunately, the Mayhem would poke and prod but not be able to tally a score. With another insurance tally this one from the stick of Dylan Carabia, Pensacola would ice the game out of reach of the Mayhem.
The Mayhem will return home next weekend for a foray with the Roanoke Railyard Dawgs. Friday night will be Healthcare Heroes Night where all those who are serving in the medical field will be eligible for a 25% discount on any seat of their choosing pending availability. Saturday night will be the return of the Mayhem’s annual Teddy Bear Toss which took a backseat during last year’s shortened season. After the first Mayhem goal, fans are encouraged to throw stuffed animals on the ice to be collected for those in need. Come out to take apart of one of the greatest traditions in hockey and root for the home team.
